THE HEART OF CRAPTASTIC CANCER

My Story

At 41, I was raising four wonderful kids with my loving, supportive husband, living a busy, joyful life. Then came the breast cancer diagnosis. The road was tough: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and a 10-year medication plan. There were roadblocks and hard days, including side effects, fear, exhaustion, and moments when I questioned how much more we could handle. Through it all, I chose to stay positive and lean on humor. I found ways to laugh even on the hardest days, reminding myself I was still the same mom who could make her kids smile, still the same wife who could share a light moment with her husband, still me.

Today, I’m officially cancer-free. I’ve completed treatment, finished my 10-year medication, and come out stronger. Craptastic Cancer exists to share honest stories, helpful resources, and a little laughter. Because humor helped me get through the tough parts, maybe it can help you, too. If you’re on this journey, know you’re not alone. Welcome, let’s keep finding the light.

With Love, Heidi

Helpful Tips

HAIR LOSS
Gentle haircutting session with clippers, depicting family support during hair loss step from chemotherapy.

When my hair started falling out, I decided to shave it all off. I knew I couldn't handle seeing hair in my hands every morning. When the hair loss started, I had my kids all help shave it off with the clippers. The first few nights, it was hard to sleep with the short hair because it scraped on the pillow... My tip: shave it ALL off, rock the bald look, and sleep like a baby!

ONCOLOGY APPOINTMENTS
Smartphone recording a medical consultation, showing a way to capture oncology details.

Recording my oncology appointments on my phone was a total lifesaver. When you're overwhelmed by a new diagnosis, it is so easy to fixate on one thing and miss the rest of the conversation. By recording each session, I could listen back later in a calmer setting to process the complex terms and details I might have missed, even if someone was there taking notes for me. It provided a sense of control over a confusing situation. Just remember to always ask your doctor for their permission before you hit record to ensure they are comfortable with it.

MEDICATION
Clear pill organizer and notebook, showcasing tools for medication management during chemotherapy

Stay organized! Cancer patients frequently take various medications, making it challenging to keep everything straight. A pill organizer and a small notebook can be helpful tools to track what medications you are taking and when.

CONSTIPATION

The LAST thing you need while fighting cancer is constipation. During chemotherapy, I used MiraLAX, which helped! (Consult your doctor first and drink plenty of water.)

FINDING A DOCTOR
Finding a Doctor for Breast Cancer Treaments

It is important to find a doctor you feel comfortable with and have confidence in—especially when facing cancer. Read patient reviews on sites like Healthgrades, Vitals, or RateMDs. Trust your gut—if you don't feel heard or supported, it's okay to keep looking.

JOURNALING
Cancer journey journal for writing thoughts, feelings, and tracking treatment

Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a powerful way to process the emotional toll of a cancer journey. Whether it's documenting your medical path or just venting about a hard day, journaling helps clear the mind.
